Faith-based: Kingdom Stories and the Sound of Freedom playbook
Don't let the critics in. Build a fan-acquisition machine. Plays deeper than coastal art-film theaters.
The genre that does not ask permission
Faith-based is the clearest case study in what specialty looks like when you stop performing for the wrong audience. The two studios to watch (Kingdom Stories and Angel) have built different machines around the same insight: the audience is real, evenly distributed across the country, and structurally underserved. Critics are not the gatekeeper. The fan is.
“The folks at Kingdom Stories are incredibly consistent. They make movies that critics sniff at and dismiss them as TV movies, but audiences seem to always give them an A or an A+ Cinemascore.” [2025-11-07]
Sarah’s Oil (2025) opened with seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and the read in the business was that MGM correctly chose not to ask. The critic gap on faith-based is not a problem to manage; it is a feature of the distribution model. Inviting the wrong reviewer to a film their audience does not trust is a marketing self-inflicted wound. The right move is to skip the embargo conversation entirely.
The Sound of Freedom playbook
The 2023 breakout is the most studied single release in the archive. Angel Studios opened a faith-based child-trafficking drama on July 4, in the middle of summer tentpole season, on what the business calls “one of the sketchiest holidays of the year,” and won the day.
“There’s a faith based drama about child trafficking called Sound of Freedom opening today, in the middle of Summer escapist tentpole season, on one of the sketchiest Holiday’s of the year; and it might win the day at the boxoffice.” [2023-07-04]
The mechanism was years of audience curation, not a marketing spend. Angel had built a crowdfunding-then-subscription-then-club model, with 50,000 individual investors. They knew exactly who to talk to, and they had been talking to them for years. The film was already pre-sold before the trades knew it existed.
“And they didn’t spend a dime on TV.” [2023-07-04]
The follow-up was a pay-it-forward word-of-mouth innovation: recommenders could literally buy tickets for strangers. That is word-of-mouth with a built-in satisfaction guarantee from the recommender, which is closer to a referral economy than a marketing campaign.
“Issue” fan-ship
The underlying mechanic has an explicit name: faith-based is not about denomination. It is about issue fan-ship, the same model Participant Media used for years on liberal causes, working in the opposite direction.
“Here’s a situation where it’s ‘issue’ fan-ship, and actually that’s not a terribly new idea either. For years, Participant has built a brand on ‘issue’ based fan-ship, just for issues that go in different political direction than Sound of Freedom.” [2023-07-14]
The strategic point: the audience is not a religious demographic. It is a values-aligned consumer base that has been told for decades that nobody is making films for them. The brand promise is not “this film is great.” It is “this film is for you.”
Plays deeper than the coastal art-film ceiling
The most under-quoted insight is that faith-based plays deeper than the urban Art-film theaters Sony Classics typically wins. The Sony Classics theater list peaks in the 600-to-1,000-screen range. Sound of Freedom played thousands of screens, and held them. The audience exists in markets the coastal specialty distributor does not staff.
The corollary is uncomfortable for parts of the industry, but it gets named directly:
“When we’re in an industry where DEI is thrown around a lot, why doesn’t that apply to red state America?” [2023-07-14]
That is not a political claim in this framing. It is a distribution claim: there is a large, consistent, under-served audience whose absence from the spreadsheet is a craft failure, not a fact of nature.
The four-part playbook
For any specialty operator considering faith-based:
- Don’t let the critics in. The embargo conversation is a trap. Match the embargo to the audience that will actually buy the ticket.
- Build the fan-acquisition machine years in advance. Sound of Freedom did not start in 2023.
- Play wider than coastal specialty. The audience is in red-state America, evenly distributed.
- Treat the recommender as a marketing channel. Pay-it-forward, club, subscription: the recommender is the campaign.
The genre is not a sleeper. It is a deeply intentional distribution model run by people who knew exactly what they were doing.
