In the note So, with the accuracy of the progress forecasts for Sam Darnold’s spleen, here’s my best take on the weekend box-office. #1 Joker - WB did some solid work here, and even though this film is more of a character study where the creepiness level of the title character lived somewhere between Justin Bieber’s Frankencats and a 50 year old man traveling alone on a Disney Cruise ship, they made it feel Super Hero adjacent.

In the note We might actually be up from last year this weekend, thanks to multiple viewings of Joker (which is kinda scary) causing it to hold up, and some decent new film.

In the note If it plays okay to both, it’s mid 30’s but if they get a lift from either the kids tomorrow or the adults tonight, they’ll get a little more. #2 Joker - Doesn’t look nearly as good as last week, plus they got a tiny lift last Sunday since a lot of the Northeast still takes off Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s day the second Monday in October.

In the note So, based on something I heard from a woman screaming at a cardboard cutout of Harvey Weinstein, here’s my best take on the weekend box-office. #1 Joker - The drop looks pretty solid right now, figure down 35% for a 3 day in the very high teens with a shot at 20. #2 Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Looks pretty standard for a 2nd weekend, figure down 55% for a 3 day in the mid high teens. #3 Zombieland 2 - Down 60% for about 11 or 12. #4 Addams Family - Looks solid today, down 35% for about 10. Black and Blue - Right now looks like 7 or 8, but could get a late surge. Countdown - Like most horror films they could also see a late night surge, but for now 6 or 7. The Current War - The recut of one of the TWC orphans, the went on about 1000 screens.

In the note So, the question is: since there are several poll based tracking services out there who don’t charge for their data, and the company that does charge has data that’s about as hard to get as the AOL free trial disks and is just as relevant today, why is anyone paying those 6 and 7 figure sums for poll based tracking anymore? #2 The Joker - With the softness of the new films, it’s pretty normal that the WOM holdovers to rise up.
