Where it turns up
Friday, August 11, 2023 Second weekend of August 2023
In the note
We’ve got our first strike affected weekend this weekend, Gran Turismo moved back a couple of weeks so they could do some sneaks and try to make up for talent not being on the publicity trail, so we’ve only got one wide film this weekend.
Friday, August 25, 2023 National Cinema Day weekend 2023
On the chart Gran Turismo (opening): $17.4M, with sneak-preview math
Expected 'Anywhere from 11ish to the low teens': with the warning that preview-stuffing 'could push them to #1' Actual: $17.4M reported, #1; the stuffing he flagged is the gap
In the note
Because we really don’t know what Sunday is gonna look like, figure this is anywhere from mid teens to high teens. Gran Turismo - Based on a True Story - Sony pushed this a couple of weeks so they could do some previews, it’s one of those movies that consumers really like but critics don’t get; the RT score is 61% for critics and 98% for audiences.
Friday, September 1, 2023 Labor Day weekend 2023
On the chart Gran Turismo (wk 2): $6.6M, -62%
Expected 'Should still be down 50% for the 3 day... right behind Barbie (sfx: Throat clearing)' Actual: $6.6M, -62%; the stuffed opening unwound on schedule
In the note
That would put Barbie at around 9 in 3 and 11 in 4, and Oppenheimer at about 5 in 3 and 6 in 4. Gran Turismo Based on a True Story - Even though a film about racing where cars go left and right on the track tends to confuse American audiences, this is holding up pretty nicely today.
Friday, August 23, 2024 Fourth weekend of August 2024
In the note
But because we’ve got a much stronger trifecta of holdovers in our quiver, we’ll have another weekend where we’ll soundly beat last year’s total (Gran Turismo, The Hill, Retribution).
