Angry Birds Tuesday, August 2019

Angry Birds 2 is opening today, yes on a Tuesday. Why is it opening on a Tuesday you ask, well it’s actually quite logical and I’m wondering why someone hasn’t done it before. Originally this was supposed to open tomorrow, to take advantage of the last remaining days of Summer School Holidays. However, Tuesday is a ‘discount’ day for many theaters across the US, so it’s by far the best weekday, often outgrossing the other individual weekdays by as much as 40%. So if they’re going Wednesday, why not bump it up one more day to Tuesday and take advantage of the robust business generated today (as well as one more day of School Holiday playtime). It looks good today, figure about $2.5 million for the day. What will be interesting is to see how the rest of the week and this weekend plays out. We’ve seen some funky results from some Wednesday openings this summer, but those films didn’t really play and this apparently has good playability.
