Where it turns up
Tuesday, July 4, 2023 July 4th 2023, the Sound of Freedom day
On the chart Sound of Freedom (July 4th opening): ~$14M day, won July 4th outright
Expected 'They will probably report the highest gross of the day. Yep, they might beat Indy today... $10 million or more for the two days' Actual: Won July 4th outright; the reported day landed ~$14M
In the note
Friday, July 14, 2023 Second weekend of July 2023
On the chart Sound of Freedom (wk 2): $27.3M, UP 39%
Expected 'Around $20 million or maybe a little more for the weekend' Actual: $27.3M, UP 39%, a near-unprecedented second-weekend increase
In the note
With OppenBarbie storming in next week, we’ll probably absolutely annihilate 2022 (Nope) next weekend and unless something goes sideways next week, we should even beat 2019 (The Lion King). We’re still about 14% ahead of 2022’s cume gross, so with the more normal roster of Summer films coming in after OppenBarbie, we’ll keep building on that lead. As you’ll read below, Sound of Freedom is actually up today from last Friday, so we’ve now got a bonafide phenomenon here.
Friday, July 21, 2023 Barbenheimer weekend 2023
On the chart Sound of Freedom (wk 3): $19.8M, -27%
Expected 'Both look like weekends in the low 20's' Actual: $19.4M and $19.8M
In the note
But after seeing the film last night, geez did they sell everyone some snake oil here. Of the 4 films that will rule the box-office this weekend (Oppenheimer, Barbie, Mission: Impossible and Sound of Freedom) I’d put this film in 4th place as far as ‘you must see this in a PLF’.
Friday, July 28, 2023 Fourth weekend of July 2023
Expected 'A little more like a mortal movie... down 30% or so for a weekend in the low teens' Actual: $12.8M, -35%
In the note
For now, I’ll say a weekend of about 30. Sound of Freedom - Still rolling along, however it’s looking a little more like a mortal movie.
Friday, October 27, 2023 Fourth weekend of October 2023
In the note
It’s down about 10 points better than normal, which should put the weekend down about 45% for a gross of about $12.5 or so. After Death - The folks at Angel (who brought us Sound of Freedom last summer) are back with a Doc about the Afterlife.
Friday, December 1, 2023 First weekend of December 2023
In the note
Unless something weird happens and this is super front loaded, this looks like $7 million or so on only 700 screens. The Shift - The folks at Angel Studios, who brought us the runaway hit The Sound of Freedom this summer are back with another crowd funded film, this time it’s a sci-fi/faith based film.
Friday, April 12, 2024 Second weekend of April 2024
In the note
You have to go deep deep deep into the grosses to find a theater that did well on Sound of Freedom.
Thursday, July 4, 2024 July 4th 2024, the holiday dispatch
In the note
Right now I’ll take a hipshot and say it does about $20 million, but I’m not sure it will get there. The Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot - Angel Studios, who brought us The Sound of Freedom last year, seem to be stepping into the void we have with Participant stepping out of the business.
Friday, July 12, 2024 Second weekend of July 2024
In the note
Sound of Freedom was up a stunning 40% from opening weekend, grossing $27.3 million, and without that outlier we would be ahead this year.
Friday, August 9, 2024 Second weekend of August 2024
In the note
Last Summer, Angel caught lightning in a bottle with Sound of Freedom, bringing people who hadn’t seen the inside of a movie theater in decades, and most of that business was in suburbs and fly over states.
Friday, November 22, 2024 Glicked weekend 2024
In the note
Assassin - You would think this is just a job posting for a Trump cabinet member, but it's a well reviewed film from the folks at Angel, who brought us last summer's Sound of Freedom.
