Theaters are fighting enough headwinds these days without turning one day a year into The Purge. I’m sure the concession sales were good, because there were more people coming in, but too many of those concessions were purchased so they could throw it at someone else. Anyway, with the accuracy normally associated with a Post Malone Skin Cancer screening, here are some thoughts on the weekend box office. Equalizer 3 - Nice to see movie stars being movie stars at the box-office, and I was a little concerned about this film because there’s a TV version of the IP.

We’ll take a step back next week, because Equalizer 3 opened on Labor Day last year, but we should have a really good September and dig a little more out of the hole we got into at the beginning of the year.

We really need to rethink this weekend, it certainly should be considered the same way we treat the other holiday weekends. Because we only have a couple of minor films this weekend, we’ll be way behind last year (Equalizer 3, Bottoms); and even though we’re going to be 20% or more behind last year, the overall total is pretty low so it’s not like being behind 20% in July.

Last year was pretty good for this time of year (The Nun II, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, plus weekend #2 for The Equalizer 3), but as good as it was, we’re gonna scream by that number this weekend, maybe by as much as 50%.
