Where it turns up

Friday, June 9, 2023 Second weekend of June 2023
On the chart Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (opening): $61.0M
Expected 'As of right now, this looks like mid 50's' Actual: $61.0M
In the note So essentially they made Bumblebee 2, which opened to $21 million, at double the budget. Of course (and I’ve talked about this before) when you greenlight films, sometimes you take chances on actors (who haven't become bankable) that have a couple of things booked before your film, and you hope their star power will mean something by the time your film comes out.
Friday, June 16, 2023 Father's Day weekend 2023
Expected 'Way down today, and the weekdays foretold the drop... a 3 day in the low 20's' Actual: $20.7M, -66%
In the note Figure a drop of about 45% and a 3 day around 30 and a 4 day in the mid 30’s. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - it’s way down today, and the weekdays foretold the drop.
Friday, June 30, 2023 Final weekend of June 2023
In the note It’s going to be a weekend very similar to what the norm is for the weekend before Independence Day, we’ve had some nice $100 million tentpole openings on this weekend like last year’s Minions: The Rise of Gru and 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Thursday, July 13, 2023 Mission: Impossible Wednesday, July 2023
In the note Transformers week 1 vs Spider-verse week 2) for cosmetic purposes.
Friday, July 14, 2023 Second weekend of July 2023
In the note They’ll get beat up by the press for having a gross in the same neighborhood as Indy, Transformers and Flash (with a similar negative cost), but you take some chances in this business and this one just didn’t work out, but the gross here is a little better than those.
Thursday, August 3, 2023 Turtles Wednesday, August 2023
In the note But for three movies in a row, the studio that had a lock on #1 openings has been struggling with busting things big because of low star power (Transformers), the same but excellent movie we just saw (Mission Impossible) and an IP where the last movie was pretty bad (TMNT: Out of the Past).
Friday, August 11, 2023 Second weekend of August 2023
In the note Just look at the beatings The Flash, Indiana Jones and Transformers got (but curiously Mission Impossible got a pass with very similar numbers).
Friday, September 13, 2024 Second weekend of September 2024
In the note With a substantial IP dropping next week ( Transformers) plus 2 other wide films, we’ll probably double 2023’s same weekend total next weekend, so we’re making strides each week. Anyway, based on something I heard (on TV) during an episode of Top Chef: Springfield involving fast food (the surprise ingredient was Greyhound), here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Looks good this weekend, the strong playability combined with not much new in the marketplace should keep this a little better than the -55% norm for a 2nd weekend of this size.
Friday, September 20, 2024 Third weekend of September 2024
In the note But in a business where we need tag alongs and we’re struggling for younger moviegoers (that we might be excluding), it might be a very short sighted view. Anyway, with the same accuracy normally associated with Sean Combs’ Bumble profile, here are some thoughts about the weekend box-office. Transformers One - We’ve seen what’s going on here before, as we continue to figure out ways to mine IP from different angles, the latest trend is to take something live action and redo it with Animation (the flip side of what Disney’s been doing for a while).
