Where it turns up
Friday, October 20, 2023 Third weekend of October 2023
On the chart Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (wk 2): $33.2M, -64%
Expected 'Concert films can drop 90%+... I'll take a stab and say it's down 65% for a 3 day in the low 30's' Actual: $33.2M, -64%
In the note
There would be increases in riders like Nanny allowances for actors without kids, M & M sorting allowances or increased allowances for Ozempic (non SuperHero films) or steroids Personal Trainers (SuperHero films). Anyway, based on something I heard at a seminar titled ‘opening your movie without using a classic rock song played real slow’, and I was the only one in the room, here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR - IT’S STILL YELLING, but since some of you might be suing me for making your eyeballs bleed last week (and I might have buried a couple of decent jokes by keeping the joke through the end), I’ll leave that gimmick on the side today.
Friday, October 27, 2023 Fourth weekend of October 2023
On the chart Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (wk 3): $15.5M, -53%
Expected 'Down a fairly normal 50% for the weekend... in the mid/high teens' Actual: $15.5M, -53%
In the note
But just like all outliers, we don't know and we're just gonna have to see it play out. TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR - She took the weekdays off again this week (Mon, Tue and Wed), and there’s nothing in the weekend holdover gross that says that’s a good idea; it seems like they’re just missing revenue opportunities.
Friday, November 3, 2023 First weekend of November 2023
On the chart Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (wk 4): $13.7M, -12%
Expected 'Trending towards a drop of only 25% right now... $12 million or so, it might beat Freddy' Actual: $13.7M, -12% (Freddy held #1 by $5M)
In the note
As expected, this is an off week, there’s not much going on. This was supposed to be the weekend of Dune 2, but without the ability to leverage the considerable star power on the publicity trail, they tapped out. However, last year it was the same situation (One Piece Film Red and an expansion of The Banshees of Inisherin), so we’ll end up with a very similar cume gross. Because Halloween was on Thursday in 2019, opening something big the day after wasn’t that attractive, so the film that weekend was a little light (Terminator: Dark Fate, Harriet, Motherless Brooklyn, Arctic Dogs). We’ll still only gross about 60% of that weekend this year, but normally it would have been worse. Nothing is really on my mind today, other than the usual praying and hoping for the end of the strike; so instead of writing something mediocre (again), I’ll save your eyes and address a couple of things in the film section I find interesting. But based on something I heard in a discussion about who's the most miserable fan base in the NFL, the Cowboys or the Eagles, here are some thoughts about the weekend box office. TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR - Really good hold today so far, and yes you’re reading this right, it might beat Freddy this weekend.
Friday, November 10, 2023 Second weekend of November 2023
Expected 'It's down 55% right now and probably will end up with a weekend in the mid/high single digits' Actual: $6.1M, -55%
In the note
And even though the critics didn’t love it, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is just fine, so it’s possible the playability and word of mouth could change the minds of some of those tag-alongs and it could end up higher. TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERA’S TOUR - Psych! Last week wasn’t the farewell week, so all those fans that rushed to get a glimpse before it left got suckered.
