But then came Beauty and the Beast, and not only did the process improve (there were sequences that looked nothing like we’d ever seen before in an Animated film) but the storytelling was spectacular and audiences now expected a different look to animated films. A couple of years ago Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened to $35 million, which is pretty low for a top shelf IP like Spider-Man, even for an animated take.

5 years ago, Sony/Marvel went that route with Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and it opened……okay. But because it was a movie people loved and played and played (and won the Best Animated Film Oscar), it laid the groundwork for the next chapter. And the next chapter, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened a little better than okay at $123 million.
