Thursday, July 13, 2023 Mission: Impossible Wednesday, July 2023
On the chart MI: Dead Reckoning (Wednesday day): ~$16M incl. previews (implied)
Expected 'Figure it's in the $9 million range for today, bringing the total day including previews to about $16 million' Actual: Window arithmetic consistent: $23.8M Wed+Thu against his $16M Wednesday
In the note
But when it comes to opening a movie on a Friday, there are people who agree and there are those who are wrong. We’ve got a massive tentpole opening today in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, and it’s very good, Paramount did a terrific job here and it's right in line with the previous couple of Mission: Impossible films.
Friday, July 14, 2023 Second weekend of July 2023
On the chart MI: Dead Reckoning (3-day / 5-day): $54.7M / $78.5M
Expected 'Headed to a 3 day of about $50 million, bringing the 5 day to $74 million... I might be a little low' Actual: $54.7M / $78.5M
In the note
We’re back in the tentpole part of Summer and Mission Impossible is doing normal Mission Impossible stuff; so even though the 3 day gross is a little watered down, because of our new found Red State moviegoers on Sound of Freedom, we’ll probably beat both the similar weekends in 2022 (Where the Crawdads Sing, Paws of Fury and Mrs.
Friday, July 21, 2023 Barbenheimer weekend 2023
On the chart MI: Dead Reckoning (wk 2): $19.4M, -65%
Expected 'Both look like weekends in the low 20's' Actual: $19.4M and $19.8M
In the note
Right now this looks in the low mid 70's to me. Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One / Sound of Freedom - They are really close to each other and we'll have to see if Q puts Xenu back in the volcano, but MI has about 1000 more runs and that will probably be the difference between 3rd and 4th place.
Friday, July 28, 2023 Fourth weekend of July 2023
In the note
At that point it’s all on the movie, and as a great example Mission: Impossible did just fine in weekend #2 (once you account for the missing PLF’s) against not one but two monsters.
Thursday, August 3, 2023 Turtles Wednesday, August 2023
In the note
Another Wednesday opening today, and we’ll see if it works out this time, since it didn’t work out that great for Mission: Impossible. Today is good on the Spider-Verse adjacent Teenage Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (look wise anyway), but the next couple of days will be the real test.
Friday, July 12, 2024 Second weekend of July 2024
In the note
Even though the new films this weekend won’t equal the $54.7 million Mission: Impossible did last year, as usual, it’s the holdovers that will be the difference between getting even and coming in a little behind.
