Where it turns up

Friday, October 27, 2023 Fourth weekend of October 2023
On the chart Five Nights at Freddy's (opening): $80.0M, day-and-date with Peacock
Expected 'It's got to really collapse tomorrow to get lower than $70 million or so... if it plays like a non day and date movie, $100 million isn't out of the question' Actual: $80.0M, inside the band
In the note So now you can fish where the fish are (and have some of the fish pointing out the hook to other fish saying ’that looks tasty'), and it was only a matter of time before someone caught a big one. The big one this weekend is obviously Five Nights at Freddy’s, and to say it’s a surprise is an understatement.
Friday, November 3, 2023 First weekend of November 2023
On the chart Five Nights at Freddy's (wk 2): $19.0M, -76%
Expected 'Figure it's down 90% for a weekend of about $10 million' Actual: $19.0M, -76%
In the note As expected, this is an off week, there’s not much going on. This was supposed to be the weekend of Dune 2, but without the ability to leverage the considerable star power on the publicity trail, they tapped out. However, last year it was the same situation (One Piece Film Red and an expansion of The Banshees of Inisherin), so we’ll end up with a very similar cume gross. Because Halloween was on Thursday in 2019, opening something big the day after wasn’t that attractive, so the film that weekend was a little light (Terminator: Dark Fate, Harriet, Motherless Brooklyn, Arctic Dogs). We’ll still only gross about 60% of that weekend this year, but normally it would have been worse. Nothing is really on my mind today, other than the usual praying and hoping for the end of the strike; so instead of writing something mediocre (again), I’ll save your eyes and address a couple of things in the film section I find interesting. But based on something I heard in a discussion about who's the most miserable fan base in the NFL, the Cowboys or the Eagles, here are some thoughts about the weekend box office. TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR - Really good hold today so far, and yes you’re reading this right, it might beat Freddy this weekend.
Friday, November 10, 2023 Second weekend of November 2023
On the chart Five Nights at Freddy's (wk 3): $9.0M, -53%
Friday, September 13, 2024 Second weekend of September 2024
In the note Figure it’s down 50% for a weekend (which in the true 3 day to 3 day comparison, is only down 44%) in the mid 50’s. Speak No Evil - Hey, I know you, didn’t you guys used to be Blumhouse? Ever since the smash hit Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s been Night Swim, Imaginary, Afraid and now Speak No Evil.
Friday, October 11, 2024 Second weekend of October 2024
In the note But even though the last weekend in October 2023 had Five Nights at Freddy’s, we should have enough this year to get us close or even with 2023’s weekend. But once we get into November, it should be all surplus. I got a lot of responses to last week’s email, some on Friday but most of them came through on Saturday and Sunday and had nothing to do with box-office.
Friday, October 25, 2024 Fourth weekend of October 2024
In the note This year should be pretty good and we might even do a little better than the same weekend last year, which is an accomplishment considering the Monstrous Five Nights at Freddy’s opened last year on this weekend.
