You look at the slate that came over with the purchase in 2019, and you can almost hear Rupert Murdoch looking at it saying ‘get me out of this business, let’s concentrate on our core business where we produce TV that sells catheters and doomsday meal kits’. Anyway, with a similar accuracy as the Intuit Dome entry system, here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. Alien: Romulus - I talked about two interesting things about this movie, the 2nd aspect is that this film was greenlit for Hulu; and after they saw what they had, it’s now a very successful theatrical release.
Friday, August 23, 2024 Fourth weekend of August 2024
On the chart Alien: Romulus (wk 2): $16.4M, -61%
Expected 'Should be down about 55% for a weekend in the very high teens' Actual: $16.4M, -61%

Even markets that should behave similarly to LA and NY aren’t as good, so once again I’m asking the question ‘are we only making movies for people we know?’. Anyway, with the accuracy normally associated with Starbucks carbon offset program, here are some thoughts about the weekend box-office. Alien: Romulus - Pretty normal 2nd weekend for a Horror/Sci-Fi film of this size, should be down about 55% for a weekend in the very high teens. Deadpool & Wolverine - Considering we’re pivoting back to a non school holiday period, this is about right today where it should be, down about 45% for a weekend in the mid/high teens. It Ends With Us - Down a decent amount today, but considering its core audience is back in school, that makes sense.
Friday, August 30, 2024 Labor Day weekend 2024
On the chart Alien: Romulus (wk 3): $9.2M, -44%
Expected 'Down a normal 50% for a 3 day around 8' Actual: $9.2M, -44%
In the note
Looking rock solid today, should be down only 25% or so for a 3 day in the low teens, and a 4 day in the mid teens. Alien: Romulus - Down a normal 50% for a 3 day around 8 and a 4 day of around 10. Reagan - As you would guess, this is great in the red states (and Huntington Beach), but the critics really beat this up, currently at 19%. The exits are a lot better, and as usual we’ll have to see which measure has any effect on the rest of the weekend.
Friday, November 15, 2024 Third weekend of November 2024

The 4 quad family movie gets groups twice the size of the male skewing buddy action comedy, it’s kind of the opposite of what happened in August with Alien: Romulus. The Alien franchise was living in the Sci-Fi drama world for a couple of films (that kept decaying in gross, because that genre lives with older males), but by leaning into the Horror genre, the groups broadened in scope and we saw the gross pop back up.
