Where it turns up

Friday, May 10, 2024 Second weekend of May 2024
In the note Garfield is doing fan shows on the Sunday afternoon the weekend before they open, and they are leaning into the IP of the movie by branding it ‘Lazy Sunday’.
Friday, May 24, 2024 Memorial Day weekend 2024
On the chart The Garfield Movie (opening): $24.0M 3-day
Expected 'High 20s for the 3 day... but this is growing in a weird way, so anything could happen' Actual: $24.0M 3-day
In the note But most of you have already left town for the weekend and probably won’t read this anyway. However, I continued to get responses to my Previews/Fan shows issue. Let’s be clear here, I don’t think there’s a chance in hell we’ll get away from doing them, so it's a nice theory but I can’t see it happening. Anyway, with the same predictive accuracy as a Cannes standing ovation, here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. The Garfield Movie - They had a really encouraging day yesterday with their previews, and today’s numbers are really interesting.
Friday, May 31, 2024 Final weekend of May 2024
On the chart The Garfield Movie (wk 2): $14.0M, -42%; #1
Expected 'Will probably win today... a 3 day in the very low teens' Actual: $14.0M, won, as called
In the note But there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way that I should have realized a long time ago; I seem to make mediocre people really jumpy. Anyway, with the expected accuracy of a Singapore Airlines seat belt light, here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. The Garfield Movie - This is going to be interesting this weekend. Garfield will probably win today (they won last night) and they should win the weekend.
Friday, June 7, 2024 First weekend of June 2024
On the chart The Garfield Movie (wk 3): $10.0M, -29%
Expected 'Very small drops from last week' and a Sony 1-2 finish Actual: -29% and -25%; Sony took #1 and #2
In the note Both Garfield (which should give Sony a nice 1 - 2 finish this weekend) and IF have very small drops from last week, but the competition is showing up in Furiosa, and it’s way down today.
Friday, June 14, 2024 Father's Day weekend 2024
On the chart The Garfield Movie (wk 4): $4.8M, -52%
In the note And the ‘known IP’ treasure chest is getting pretty sparse now. Looking at what’s been going on lately, the audience keeps telling us they need a break from the depressing world we’re in and will pay to feel good. As one of the smartest industry vets I’ve ever known always says ‘funny is money’; and if you look at the top 3 films this weekend, Inside Out 2, Bad Boys Ride or Die and The Garfield Movie, it’s IP + funny. If you go back to last Christmas, which is always a cage match when all the films drop at the same time, what broke out and had legs? Wonka and Anyone But You.
