And because of the critical reaction in Cannes, both films came back in a hole they needed to dig out of. Last fall, Searchlight brought Empire of Light to Telluride with the idea that they had a beautiful film that speaks to core moviegoers (and the Guilds/Academy), and could go very deep into awards season.
