Where it turns up

Friday, March 3, 2023 First weekend of March 2023
On the chart Creed III (opening): $58.4M, franchise best
Expected 'Headed to a franchise best mid 40's' Actual: $58.4M, franchise best, and then some
In the note Maybe we should change the name of the award from Best Picture to Best Cool Picture, and even though that name sounds very MTV Movie Awards, it’s pretty much what we’ve become. Anyway, based on something I heard from Aaron Rodgers during our darkness retreat (although, embarrassingly neither of us noticed the rate was ‘double occupancy’ when we signed up), here are some thoughts on the weekend box-office. Creed III - Looking terrific today, but not only is this film an important component in bringing back moviegoers on a regular basis, it’s something all the streamers should pay close attention to.
Friday, March 10, 2023 Oscar weekend 2023
On the chart Creed III (wk 2): $27.3M, -53%
Expected 'Figure it's down about 55% for the weekend and a gross in the mid 20's' Actual: $27.3M, -53%
In the note One thing that's encouraging here; with Creed growing from the last edition and this growing from the last edition, it reverses the trend we saw before the shutdown where sequels seemed to go the other way and decayed with each increasing roman numeral. Creed III - After the sensational opening last week and the exceptional exit polls, you would expect this to hold up really nicely this weekend. However, we’re getting back to a more normal marketplace where the next film up can add some noise to the competitive landscape and the holdover here looks closer to norm.
Friday, March 17, 2023 Third weekend of March 2023
On the chart Creed III (wk 3): $15.4M, -44%
Expected 'Looks down about 40% for a weekend in the mid teens' Actual: $15.4M, -44%
In the note We’ll have to see if this improves over the weekend (just like we’ve been seeing lately), but for now it looks like low/mid 30’s. Scream VI - Looks a lot like the drop for the 2nd weekend of Scream, so figure the same -60% drop and a weekend in the high teens. Creed III - Looks down about 40% for a weekend in the mid teens. Champions - Showing some serious playability today, might be down as little as 30% this weekend for a gross in the mid 3’s. Moving On - Went 800 runs and looks like about a $1k psa for a gross of about $800k. Inside - Went 400 runs and looks like a weekend of about $250k. Walk up moviegoers are consumers who go to ’the movies’ instead of a specific movie.
Friday, March 24, 2023 Fourth weekend of March 2023
In the note In March, Creed III was the coincidence and opened to 58% more than Creed II.
Friday, March 1, 2024 First weekend of March 2024
In the note And that’s saying something because last year Creed III (thanks to the late MGM distribution chief’s prescient dating skills) led the box office with a series high $58 million, but we also had a Demon Slayer movie at $10 million.
